Frequently asked questions
What vaccines does a kitten need at 8 weeks?
Most vets start the FVRCP combination vaccine (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia) at 6–8 weeks, repeated every 3–4 weeks. The first feline leukemia (FeLV) dose is also recommended for all kittens at this visit.
Why does the last kitten shot have to be at 16 weeks or later?
Antibodies from the mother can block the vaccine in young kittens. A final FVRCP dose at or after 16 weeks (some guidelines say 16–20 weeks) makes sure the kitten builds its own protection.
When can my kitten get the rabies vaccine?
Usually from 12 to 16 weeks old. The exact minimum age and how often boosters are needed are set by your state, province or country.
Do indoor cats need the feline leukemia (FeLV) vaccine?
Guidelines recommend the initial two-dose kitten series for all kittens, because their future lifestyle isn't certain. After the 1-year booster, ongoing FeLV vaccination is usually reserved for cats that go outdoors or live with FeLV-positive cats — your vet decides.
Is this schedule a substitute for my vet's advice?
No. It is a general guide based on published feline vaccination guidelines. Always follow the plan your veterinarian gives you.
