Frequently asked questions
Is a digital rabies certificate valid?
A digital copy is great for boarding, groomers and new vets, and many accept it. Border officials and some airlines still need the original signed certificate, so keep both.
What must a rabies certificate include?
Pet name and description, microchip number, vaccine product and lot number, date given, expiry date, and the veterinarian's name, licence and signature.
How long is a rabies vaccine valid?
A pet's first rabies vaccine is valid for 1 year. Later boosters may be valid for 1 or 3 years depending on the vaccine used and local law.
How long after the rabies shot can my pet travel?
The UK and EU require at least 21 days after the first rabies vaccine, which must be given after the microchip. Other countries, such as Australia, need a blood test and much longer waits.
What happens if the rabies vaccine lapses?
If a booster is late, the next shot may count as a new first vaccine, restarting travel waiting periods. Set a reminder well before the expiry date.
